TEENAGE/YOUNG PERSON COUNSELLING

Growing up can be tough, and the teenage years often bring unique challenges and pressures. That’s where I can help. With specialised training in adolescent counselling, I provide a compassionate and confidential space where teenagers can explore their emotions, experiences, and struggles. My goal is to empower young people to better understand themselves and develop the skills they need to overcome obstacles. Whether it’s navigating relationships, managing stress, or coping with anxiety, my counselling services are designed to offer meaningful support during this pivotal stage of their lives.

THERAPY AND COUNSELLING FOR ADOLESCENTS

There are few things more worrying as a parent or caregiver than seeing your child experience emotional difficulties.

With the pressure of exams, social media, friendships, and self-identity, modern life can often feel overwhelming for young people. Many may secretly struggle emotionally, but find it hard to talk to someone close, often out of fear of being judged or through embarrassment.

If a young person internalises their problems, it can lead to unhealthy behaviours. However, they, and you, don’t have to cope alone — help is available

Teenage counselling can play a vital role in improving mental health, boosting confidence, enhancing academic performance, and building stronger relationships.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ADOLESCENT COUNSELLING

Adolescent counselling is designed to support young people as they navigate the complexities of teenage life, from emotional challenges to academic pressures and social relationships. This form of therapy is tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, fostering a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where teenagers can express their thoughts and feelings.

Depending on your teenager’s specific concerns, the therapeutic approach may include talk therapy, creative techniques, and evidence-based practices like Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Therapy sessions are structured to empower teenagers, helping them gain insight into their emotions and behaviours while developing healthy coping strategies.

Confidentiality is key to building trust, and I ensure that your teenager understands that everything discussed remains private, with the exception of safeguarding concerns. The ultimate goal is to help your teenager feel supported, understood, and capable of managing the challenges they face as they transition into adulthood.

MY APPROACH

As a pluralistic counsellor and psychotherapist, I tailor my approach to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of adolescents.

Recognising that teenagers often experience heightened pressures and challenges in today’s world, I incorporate a variety of therapeutic modalities, such as person-centred therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), pschodynamic theory, attachent theory and creative interventions. This allows me to adapt to each individual’s way of processing emotions and working through difficulties.

Teenagers may find it difficult to express their feelings directly, often internalising them or showing them through behaviours. My approach is collaborative and empathic, using both talking therapy and creative methods, such as journaling, art, or metaphor, to help young people express themselves in ways that feel most comfortable to them.

By offering a safe, non-judgmental space, I encourage teenagers to explore their thoughts and feelings, helping them gain insight into their behaviours, build resilience, and develop practical coping strategies.

I believe in fostering autonomy, allowing the young person to lead the direction of the therapy while guiding them toward self-awareness and emotional understanding.

Early intervention is often essential in providing teenagers with the tools they need to overcome difficulties and thrive into adulthood.

TAKING THE FIRST STEP

Therapy provides a safe and regular space for teenagers to express and explore their difficult feelings.

It can be easier to talk to a counsellor — a neutral party who listens without judgement, offering empathy and understanding.

Counsellors won’t ‘fix the problem’ or offer direct advice but can help your teenager gain insight into their issues, understand their emotions, and find new ways of addressing challenges.

Counselling often brings relief, allowing young people to talk openly, perhaps for the first time.

INITIAL CONSULTATION

Your teenager’s well-being is my priority, and finding the right counsellor for them is an essential first step.

To help you and your family get started, I offer a complimentary, brief consultation with parents or caregivers.

This session, which can be done via Zoom or over the telephone, allows us to explore your concerns, assess your child’s specific needs, and discuss how I might be able to help. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask any questions or share any concerns you may have.

If you would prefer a face-to-face meeting, this can be arranged, though it will incur a small charge.

THE THERAPEUTIC JOURNEY

Adolescent counselling creates a secure and nurturing space where young individuals can navigate the complex emotions of transitioning from childhood to adulthood.

Each teenager is unique, and their therapy journey reflects that. It may cover topics such as relationships, identity exploration, stress, and self-esteem. The direction of therapy is always led by the teenager, not dictated by the counsellor. This personalised approach ensures their experiences are validated, allowing them to move forward with confidence and clarity.

SUPPORTING YOUR TEENAGER’S WELLBEING

If you are concerned about your child, it is always worth seeking professional help. Therapy provides an opportunity for them to explore their emotions and work through difficulties in a healthy, supportive environment. It’s important for teenagers to feel comfortable with their therapist, and sometimes they may want to explore different options until they find the right fit. As parents, your role in supporting their therapy is crucial, from helping to schedule appointments to showing interest in their progress.

I understand that many teenagers are busy with school, extracurricular activities, and social commitments. That’s why I offer flexible options, including online therapy sessions, to fit into their busy schedules.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND TRUST

Adolescent therapy maintains the same confidentiality as adult therapy, with clear boundaries to ensure that parents are kept informed with the teenager’s consent and knowledge. This foundation of trust is key to building a positive therapeutic relationship where your teenager can speak freely and gain the independence they need to bring about meaningful changes in their lives.

However, it’s important for your child to know that what is shared in the session remains private unless they give permission for it to be shared.  There is one exception — if there are safeguarding concerns, disclosure may be necessary to ensure their safety and well-being. This is done only when required and in the best interest of your child’s protection.

WHY CHOOSE LORRAINE’S COUNSELLING AND WELLBEING?

Recognising that every young person has unique emotional and developmental needs, I provide a tailored, integrative approach that supports their individual journey. I combine traditional therapeutic methods with more creative approaches, ensuring that each session is aligned with your child’s preferred way of expressing themselves.

While I incorporate Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and person-centred counselling, I also integrate creative therapies which allow young people to communicate non-verbally when words feel inadequate. Whether it’s through art, creative exercises, or talking, I ensure that every individual feels safe, comfortable, and heard.

My qualifications, including advanced Level 5 training in Children and Young Person (CYP) Counselling, allow me to provide the highest standard of care.

With over three years of focused experience in working with children and adolescents, I have developed a compassionate, CYP-centred approach that empowers young people to explore their emotions in a secure and supportive environment.

As a registered member of the NCPS and with enhanced DBS clearance, I am dedicated to offering both a professional and ethically sound space where your child’s safety and well-being are my priority.
